The history, culture and operation of trade unions in UK

(Mr. Stanley Ho)

(Green Jobs and Just Transition)的培訓工作。

The trade union movement has a long history in the UK and the concept of labour rights is deeply rooted among all workers.  Over the last 150 years, there were many ups and downs on the movement.

Recently, we have seen a rise in collective industrial actions across a range of sectors to fight for better pay and working conditions.

As a Hongkonger living in the UK, how much do we understand the history, culture and operation of trade unions here?  In what ways should we see recent industrial actions and their effect on us?  What is the relationship between trade unions and political parties?  And whether or not I should join the trade union? Guess many of us may ponder these questions in our mind.  Let’s take this opportunity in this coming 5C salon to understand more about it through our Guest Speaker, Mr Stanley Ho, who has worked in the union in Hong Kong and the UK.

Mr. Stanley Ho

Graduated from the History Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Stanley Ho worked for the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions for more than ten years, and was involved in the 2013 Hong Kong dock strike. In 2021, he went to Wales and joined the Trade Union Congress, mainly responsible for Green Jobs and Just Transition training.
