"Gathering Leaves Hong Kong" is proud to join hands with the 4th "UKHK Book Fair", bringing together Hong Kong booksellers from across the United Kingdom. Under the theme “A Cross-Leaves Journey”, the event will showcase a rich collection of works that have travelled from Hong Kong to the UK—stories of resilience, creativity, and cultural connection.
We warmly invite everyone to come together through literature and to embark on a new chapter of our shared experience here in the UK.
Talk abstract:
This book is a history of resistance by Hong Kong people since 1997. It shows that the 2019 popular uprising was not just a quest for electoral or legal reform, but part of a longer and broader struggle for decolonization. This talk reflects on the achievements and short comings of two decades of social protests, and explains why a popular decolonial subjecthood emerged not under alien British rule but under national Chinese rule.
