SARS was identified first in China in November 2002 but the World Health Organisation (WHO) was notified of the outbreak in February and issued a global alert in March 2003 then in July 2003 declared SARS ‘contained’ though cases were reported until May 2004. Worldwide 8,000+ people were infected resulting in 774 deaths.
