Stephen Vines, a renowned journalist, writer and broadcaster who worked in Hong Kong for 35 years before leaving in 2021, sharing his talk titled “The Golden Age of Hong Kong Media.” He will be sharing his talk titled "The Golden Age of Hong Kong Media."

Stephen Vines talks about the period of the late 1980s and 1990s when Hong Kong's media was at its most vibrant and impressively free - he looks at the start up of new publications such as Next and Apple Daily in Chinese and his experience as founding editor Eastern Express in English, the flourishing of RTHK as a public broadcaster, the emergence of new media and the role Hong Kong played as a communications centre for international publications in Asia. He also looks at what happened after 2020 with the rollout of media suppression.
Bio:
Stephen Vines is a journalist, writer and broadcaster who worked in Hong Kong for 35 years before leaving in 2021 to escape the consequences of the draconian National Security Law. He was the presenter of the public broadcasters’ last surviving TV current affairs show. Previously he was the founding editor of the daily ‘Eastern Express’ newspaper. During his time in Hong Kong he worked as a correspondent for The Sunday Times. The Observer, The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph, The Independent and the BBC. He is the author of several books, Defying the Dragon - Hong Kong and the World's Largest Dictatorship, is the most recent. He is a director of Hong Kong
